Unisex Pendant - Ancient Oak heartwood, 24 inch leather code (approx) and silver-plated lobster clasp

This pendant is made out of very special wood indeed. This is weathered Oak heartwood - only found on ancient Oak trees. It is probably already several hundred years old and has a wonderfully evocative, tactile quality.

The branch that this pendant is made from was removed from a several hundred year old Oak tree a few miles from our home in Carmarthenshire, West Wales. Because the tree was many centuries old, the sap wood had long since gone and the limb contained only this naturally-weathered ‘heart wood’ (which provides the tree with its structural strength) and it is from this ancient hard oak ‘heart wood’ that this design is made. Due to the hardness of the wood, unusual grain pattern and natural splits, oak heartwood is a real challenge to work with. However, once cleaned up, it emits a centuries-old warm glow that is unmistakable. Many hours of work go in cleaning the wood. As you can imagine, it looks very different when first removed from the tree, but we believe it is well worth the effort...

The cord is genuine 3mm leather and the lobster clasp is silver-plated

The pendant itself has been treated with several coats of our homemade beeswax and linseed oil wax, which gives it the sheen that you see in the photos.

Dimensions – 24 inches long (approx) with a 9cm pendant (approx)

gorlech are Claire and Paul, woodcrafters based in rural West Wales.

This ring box was hand-crafted by us in our home workshop from wood we sourced ourselves whilst managing a local woodland. We are passionate about the importance of woodlands and the role that wood can play in shaping a more sustainable future.

Wood is a unique, in that – if harvested correctly - it is a completely sustainable, carbon-neutral and zero-waste material. It is also warm, tactile and inherently beautiful. Our ancestors knew this, and we hope to follow in their tradition by providing high-quality, hand-crafted alternatives to the mass-produced items sold in big stores across the globe.

By purchasing this pendant you will be joining us on our journey to put wood back in our homes and our hearts, as well as doing justice to that all-important ring.

The item you receive will be the ring box in the displayed photos.

Additional

Our products (and the packaging for our products) are not suitable for children under 3 years of age due to small parts.

Many of our products are made of surplus, recycled or 'waste wood'. Consequently there may be marks, blemishes and splits on the product, but these will not compromise the structural integrity of the item (i.e. we do not sell products that we think will break with normal use!). We think that these marks, blemishes and splits are what gives our pieces their individual and rustic charm.

We only use paints, oils, waxes and varnishes that meet current UK Safety Standards to bring out the best in our wood products. Where an item is intended for food use, we use ‘Raw Linseed Oil’ (which is safe for this purpose and doesn’t leave an unpleasant taste which could contaminate food). Items with evidence of woodworm have been appropriately treated.

Our wooden or painted candle / tealight holders are designed for use by responsible adults only – never leave a naked flame unattended.

The very observant of you may notice that items on our site have an individual number on the back – our products are NOT mass produced, we only sell hand-crafted items that we make or upcycle ourselves.
